Rhythmic gymnastics, Olympic discipline since 1984, combines elements of ballet, gymnastics, theatrical dance, apparatus manipulation and strength. Sixteen year old Mexican athlete Ana Luisa Bucio Perez bears both, the necessary talent and the staying power to become one of the great ones in this demanding discipline. The ambitious athlete is getting ready for Olympia since she turned four and is Mexico’s great expectation for Peking in 2008.
A training accident in October 2005 threatened to smash all hopes for Olympia. The diagnosis: herniated disc at L5-S1. For more than six months Ana suffered from immense back-pain and could not return to her routine, despite of intensive conservative therapy and excellent medical support.
Merely a spine operation promised to relieve Ana’s symptoms. The only solution offered in Mexico was an open, invasive hernia removal with possible scarring and extensive postoperative rehabilitation. Finally, German Honorary Consul in the Mexican state of Yucatan, Mr. Johannes Alois Rommel, who had heard about Ana’s misfortune and knew of the minimal invasive techniques applied by Dr. Hoogland, established the connection between Ana’s management and the German clinic.
Swiftly an appointment was settled and Ana travelled to Munich, accompanied by the wife of the Honorary Consul. Surgery was performed in early May during which Dr. Hoogland removed the herniation endoscopically and performed an abrasion of the adjacent end plates, in order to promote a better metabolism of the affected disc. Furthermore, a low dosage of the enzyme chymopapain was added into the disc space in order to prevent future herniations.
The pain that had agonized Ana for so long had disappeared right after the operation. Her surgeon, Dr. Hoogland, had prepared a special exercise routine for the first postoperative weeks. Today, three months after the endoscopic treatment, the young athlete is slowly returning to her routine, building up her former top condition at the rehabilitation department of the Alpha Klinik, under the guidance of Bernd Sigl (MedX) and Barbara Friede (Spine Complexity System/Gyrotonic).
Mexico can again cheer for Olympia!
