Second international meeting of the International Association for Biologic Joint Reconstruction (IABJR)
Biological solutions for cartilage regrowth in the knee and other joints is becoming a major subject at International conferences on the subject. Professor Juergen Toft’s clinical study and experience of 20 years in joint-preserving techniques helped create a better insight and understanding in the orthopedic community.
The second international meeting of the International Association for Biologic Joint Reconstruction (IABJR) was held at the Villa Torretta in Milan, Italy. The meeting jointly organised by Professors Pascale and Mineo of Milan University focussed on joint-preserving surgical techniques, especially in knee surgery. The society´s Honorary President, Prof. Lanny L. Johnson of Michigan University at Lansing, MI, presented his long-term results with special conditions such as OCD and osteonecrosis.
Prof. Toft of Munich´s Alpha Klinik demonstrated astonishing results following abrasion and osteotomy along withDr. Vilas Boas ´ data concerning MRI signal density and indentation tests for the replacement cartilage. It was found that the new cartilage has basically the same MRI density and physical firmness as the original so-called hyaline cartilage, a finding which is in keeping with clinical results and which opposes earlier assumptions that this type of tissue would be too inferior in quality and durability to last over time.
