"The Age of Arthritis" - European TIME refers to Dr. Toft's abrasion technique |
An article in European TIME magazine refers to the success of Dr. Toft's abrasion arthroplasty technique.
Age is no longer an issue for knee arthritis - it can strike at middle age or even younger without much warning. Most of the early stages go unnoticed. Soon enough however, if not treated, it flares up - bringing unrelentless pain and making every step you take an ordeal.
What can Dr. Juergen Toft do, you may ask, when other doctors are telling you to wait and have a total knee replacement when you are older? Many doctors share the common belief that younger patients should not have a knee replacement, but rather wait until they are "old enough" to have one. Dr. Toft's work at the Alpha Klinik has set new precedents for knee arthritis sufferers and revolutionised the opinion of many medical colleagues.

This is what European TIME Magazine has to say about it...<< In traditional replacement surgery, the bones of the joint are replaced with artificial material, which tends to wear away, producing a fine-particulate that further damages the bone. This process eventually leads to loosening of the replacement joint, which causes further pain. So patients are advised only to have replacement surgery as a last resort.
But better techniques are on the way. In Germany, more than 4,000 patients have had their joints renewed at Munich's Alpha Klinik. Surgeon Juergen Toft uses a minimally invasive, endoscopic technique called abrasion arthroplasty. Using a high-frequency burr not unlike a dentist's drill, Toft removes a 1-mm layer of bone inside the joint. The roughened surface then responds by producing its own repair tissue, which is very similar to the original cartilage. This new cartilage is initially less elastic and less shock-absorbing than the old, but Toft says that over time the layer grows to 2-4 mm and performs almost as well as the original. >> |
