Patient Study & Case Histories – Arthritis plus axial misalignment:
Abrasion arthroplasty plus an osteotomy is an alternative to joint replacement
Long-term Patient Study (short form)
In December 2003 we completed a study that tracked ca. 296 abrasion/osteotomy cases with a follow-up of up to 14.5 years. The results show that our group of patients scored significantly better - we used the Oxford knee questionnaire - than the total knee replacement and unicompartmental groups reported on in international literature.
Patient Case Histories
Dr. med. Jürgen Toft
Below, we present case histories that demonstrate the success of abrasion arthroplasty plus osteotomy for the treatment of knee arthritis combined with misalignment (bow legs or knock knees*). The histories describe real cases of patients who were operated on by Dr. Toft, but for confidentiality reasons the patients' names are not disclosed. All of the patients had been told by other physicians/institutions that they were candidates for a total knee replacement. Following joint-preserving surgery at the Alpha Klinik however, they were able to resume everyday activities and even sports and hobbies that had not been possible for years.
* Such misalignments aggravate arthritis and as such often accompany it.
