5. Mrs. R: A 54-year-old housewife who used to hike but began experiencing problems even during everyday activities.
The 54-year-old housewife Mrs. R, who used to go hiking, reported pain in her right knee - even with everyday activities such as shopping. In an orthopaedic clinic, an artificial knee was suggested, which the patient refused. She underwent abrasion and osteotomy in July 2002 and returned for removal of the hardware in January 2003, at which time the arthroscopic views were taken. Both the x-ray and the arthroscopic views clearly show the newly-formed cartilage. The patient was able to return to walking and hiking without any significant problems.
