Prof. K, a 68-year-old professor and former mountaineer who had climbed a lot in the Himalayas, had a ten-year history of pain and swelling in both knees. Joint debridements had been performed in 1993 and 1995 on both knees, with good results that lasted until 2001. In 2002, both knees reached a point where total joint replacements seemed to be the only solution. Instead however, the patient decided to undergo abrasion arthroplasty with osteotomy on the left knee in February 2002 and on the right knee in November 2002. The hardware has since been removed from both knees and, as can be seen in the following arthroscopic and x-ray images of both knees, the results are excellent. The patient is pain free on both sides and has been able to resume some lighter mountaineering with no trouble at all. |
