Knee Joint Replacement

When is this necessary?

Under certain circumstances - e.g. for elderly or very inactive people, for extremely malformed joints - it may be more desirable to replace the joint with an artificial one rather than trying to repair the damage. Sometimes only part of the joint needs to be replaced, sometimes the entire joint. This procedure usually only comes into play when other "self healing" methods such as abrasion have failed.

How successful is the procedure?

By replacing the worn cartilage surfaces with metal and/or plastic, pain is more or less completely alleviated, and the joint can handle every-day load again. The component can either be "press-fitted" or fastened by so-called bone cement.

When will I be back on my feet?

You will need to stay in Alpha Klinik for about a week, and after that in one of our partner rehab clinics for four to six weeks. At this stage, the joint can handle every-day load again, but a few months of physio will still be necessary.

How long will I be off work?

In general, six to eight weeks. However, if your work puts a lot of strain on the joint, at least twelve weeks.

Can I play sports again?

Cycling, swimming, golf and light strength training is no problem. However, sports that put a lot of load on the joint or "twist" it (e.g. tennis) should not be played after such treatment.
