GeneralStarting a week before the operation you have to refrain from Aspirin (i.e. Acetylsalicyl acid). Other blood thinning medication should be reduced. Please consult your GP.
Attention, diabetics: Metformine- antidiabetics should be cut back before the operation. Please discuss this with your own GP or, at the latest one week before the operation, with our internist dr. Blome (tel. +49-204000255).
From 6 hours pre surgery all food or drinks should be abstained from. The anaesthesist will also inform you on this during the preoperative talk the day before the operation.
As the operation is performed endoscopically (which means: in a closed procedure), the risk of complications, pain and/of scarring is minimalized.
Whether treatment is taking place on an in- or out-patient basis will be decided together with the surgeon and is , also, dependent from the medical findings.
The day after the procedure the patient returns to the clinic for a checkup. Then he or she will also be informed about the individual physiotherapeutical programme by our physiotherapist.
Usually patients can leave the clinic before midday. |

What should you bring?Comfortable clothing
In case of back surgery: an extra t-shirt which can be worn under the brace (and which therefore must not be too wide).
In case of neck surgery, for male patients: shaving equipment. On the day of surgery the (male) patient will be thoroughly shaved!
Personal toilet belongings
We kindly ask you to bring all prescribed medication in the original packing (do not forget the package insert!) so that we are prepared for possible allergic reactions (e.g. for antibiotics). |

When can the rehabilitation programme be started? And sports? And work?Usually patients can start with the rehabilitation programme after 1 week, monitored by a physiotherapist. During the first 2 weeks after the operation you are to wear a comfortable, supporting and stabilizing brace
Six weeks after the operation sports/fitness can be performed again. In principal all sports are possible. Swimming and cycling can be taken up after 2-3 weeks, other sports should be gradually built up.
Light desk work can be taken up after 1-2 weeks. However, strenuous physical work should be avoided in the first 6 weeks and be gradually built up after that.
Driving your car is allowed after one week, but a (moderate) drive in the passenger seat is no problem, not even immediately after surgery. |
