Helene Hendriks meets with her surgeon Dr. Hoogland prior to her spine operation |

Problems first appeared in Mai 2003, forcing the 23-year old to miss the concluding games of the last season. Diagnosis: slipped disc. In spite of a long period of rest and a subsequent improvement of the symptoms, Hendriks was able to attend but a few preliminary games before she had to, yet again, throw in the towel. The sportive midfield-player has spent most of the past 2 months in bed, crippled by strong pain and partial paralysis of the right leg. Finally, after numerous examinations at several spine-specialists, Hendriks neurologist contacted Dutch native Dr. Thomas Hoogland in Munich Germany, who advised an endoscopic removal of the hernia.
The young woman arrived in Munich on Monday, in company of her father, where she was treated same day, following a few further examinations. Dr. Hoogland removed a 2 X 2 cm large sequester – cause of Hendriks pain and paralysis – in a 45 minute operation, performed under safe and sparing local anaesthesia. Thanks to the minimal invasive treatment, the patient could be escorted to her hotel only 2 hours after the procedure and return to the Netherlands just one day later.
The active athlete will take up physiotherapy for about 6 weeks. Just 8 weeks after her operation, during the subsequent winter-brake, Hendriks will be able to take up her usual training and successfully join her team for the 2nd part of the season. |
