Munich, Mai 19-23, 2004
180 attendees from more than 25 nations have come together in Munich for the 17th international spine-meeting of the
IITS (International Intradiscal Therapy Society). Orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons from around the world debated new methods, ideas and techniques. Central point of the meeting were the safer, less risky minimal-invasive techniques, in comparison to the common "gold standard". Host and current president of the IITS was Dr. Thomas Hoogland.
Dr. Hoogland´s live endoscopy-workshop drew a surprisingly large crowd of attendees. Throughout the workshop they were able to interact with Dr. Hoogland during the live-coverage of an endoscopic spine surgery and retrace the technique while working with Hoogland´s surgical instruments (THESSYS, Thomas Hoogland Endoscopy System) on spine-models.
40 international capacities shared their experiences, pitfalls and results throughout the 4 day meeting.
Prof. Harms (Germany, Klinikum Karlsbad-Langensteinbach) and Dr. Etter (Swiss Spine Society) debated in a heated discussion on the pros and cons of "gold standard" fusion in comparisson to artificial disc surgery, considering long time results, risks, pitfalls, and the individual design of various artificial discs available today.
The 18. international meeting will be held 25.05 - 28.05.2005 in San Diego, California. President Dr. Thomas Hoogland turned over the presidency to Dr. Tony Yeung from Phoenix, Arizona, who concluded the meeting by inviting colleagues to join IITS for new exchange and debate in 2005.
The 2004 Munich meeting has been said to be the most successful annual meeting to date.
