Dr. Hoogland develops in cooperation with Dr. Ahrens a new endoscopic technique for nucleus replacement
Within a controlled clinical trial Dr. Hoogland develops in cooperation with Dr. Ahrens a new endoscopy technique which enables to implant a nucleus replacement minimally invasive under local anaesthesia. Up to now a replacement of the nucleus requires an open surgery which is carried out via the abdomen.
What is a nucleus replacement and when this technique is adopted?
The endoscopy nucleus replacement technique is suitable for patients with chronic back pain, caused by degeneration of the disc. The surgical techniques which are applied mostly so far are: Spondylodesis (removal of the disc and fusion through metal implants or bone material) and artificial disc replacement. Both surgeries afford an open and extensive surgery.
The new endoscopy minimally invasive surgery for nucleus replacement offers an alternative to renew the function and flexibility of he disc.
The nucleus replacement is consisting of a two-component, self hardening Polyurethane which is injected in the interior of the disc.
With a balloon technique, comparable to a stent implantation (a cardiovascular bracket which is implanted for patients who suffer on occluded coronary vessels), the Polyurethane is injected.
The primarily liquid polymer forms a buffering new nucleus after hardening. It works like a natural disc nucleus.
