GREAT NEWS FOR THE CERVICAL SPINE |
Dr. Thomas Hoogland has initiated a new era for treatment of chronic cervical disc-disease by implementing the first cases of cervical Artificial Disc Replacement surgery at the Alpha Klinik to date. The BRYAN Cervical Disc prosthesis is a cervical intervertebral disc prosthesis designed to permit motion similar to the normal cervical functional spine unit.
The BRYAN device was the first cervical prosthesis on the market and has been successfully implanted since 2002. |

Cervical disc-disease or disc-degeneration causes constant, sometimes immobilizing neck- and headaches. Changes of the disc are visualised by means of MRI and discography. The prosthesis is intended to treat stable cervical degenerative disc disease without interbody fusion - sole treatment in the past - that is assumed to lead to accelerated degeneration of adjacent disc levels.
Reconstruction of a failed intervertebral disc with a functional disc prosthesis should offer the same benefits as decompression and fusion, while simultaneously maintaining physiological motion and kinematics, thereby protecting the adjacent levels from the abnormal stresses associated with fusion.
The ARD operation takes about 2,5 hours and is performed in general anaesthesia. Patients remain hospitalised for 2 nights following surgery, a full recovery is obtained 6 weeks after the artificial disc has been implanted.
Dr. Hoogland has seen the advantage and positive outcome of ARD in lumbar cases, as performed by Drs. Willem Zeegers at the Alpha-Klinik, and his own cases with cervical ARD. He is planning to offer this form of treatment to a larger patient group in the future.
